Top Search Terms for UK 2023: Temu Explosion, ChatGPT Breakthrough, Holiday Expectations & Streaming Changes

Google Trends recently released a list of the top search terms in the UK for 2023, and as of December 21, the following words are at the forefront of searches by the British public.

First, "Temu" became a popular search term. Temu, a cross-border e-commerce platform launched by Pinduoduo, has seen its downloads on Apple's App Store climb rapidly to a staggering 9 million users since its launch in the U.K. in April 2023.Temu is known for selling a wide range of low-priced goods across a number of categories, including apparel, electronics and more, and allows customers to buy goods directly from manufacturers in China. This direct sales model has allowed it to quickly win the market in the UK.

Next up was "ChatGPT", a Microsoft-powered chatbot from OpenAI that saw a year-over-year increase in searches of 27,001 TP3 T. The bot is capable of long, fluid conversations and can assist users in writing essays, scripts, poems, and even solving computer programming problems. Searches in the U.K. reached a peak on March 20 in particular.

The third most popular search term is "bank holiday 2023". On May 8 this year, the UK celebrated an extra bank holiday to mark the coronation of Charles III. Searches for bank holidays peaked at the end of April and became a hot topic of discussion.

In addition, "Vinted" has also become a hot search term, which is an online second-hand marketplace that has seen a 90% year-on-year increase in searches this year. It's an online secondhand marketplace platform that has seen its searches grow by 90% year-on-year this year.With the rise of the secondhand marketplace, there's been a surge in demand for secondhand clothing and other products in the U.K. Vinted has more than 8 million registered members in the U.K., far more than the 1.2 million it had in 2021, Vinted's CEO, Adam Jay, had said in June.

Finally, "ITVX" also made the list. This is the streaming platform launched by ITV, with searches growing by 300% since its launch at the end of 2022.ITVX broadcasts a number of popular shows such as Love Island and Big Brother, and live streams major events such as the World Cup. The platform has reportedly streamed over 2.7 billion and has over 40 million registered users. Notably, Love Island has been broadcast 340 million times in the past year, while the World Cup has been broadcast 60 million times, an increase of over 80% from 2019.

These top search terms reflect the interests and concerns of Brits in 2023, and from e-commerce platforms to tech start-ups to streaming services, these topics have undoubtedly become the hot topics of the year.
