Imagify or WP Smush: Who's better in front of big, high-res images?

Do photography website and e-commerce station most people have had this kind of crazy moment: hard to shoot/select a particularly beautiful high-definition picture, the size of several megabytes, thousands of pixels, the results of uploading the site directly into a turtle, visitors click on the page to wait for want to curse, they look at the PageSpeed results also want to smash the keyboard.

I myself have stepped in a lot of pitfalls, so I can especially understand that kind of "can not do without the picture, but really too stuck" tangle. Today we will talk about two of the most commonly used image optimization plug-ins - theImagify respond in singing WP Smush, who really performs more reliably when confronted with really large, high-resolution images.

Let's start with the most straightforward part of the conclusion

If you mainly shoot portraits, landscapes, commercial photography, and you can't move without 3000+ pixels long images and RAW converted originals, then Imagify is a more hassle-free choice in my opinion. On the other hand, if you are an e-commerce company that sells goods, especially a lot of transparent backgrounds, clothing detail pictures, WP Smush (especially the Pro version with Super Smush) is a good choice for you. PNG The compression performance on it tends to be a little more aggressive.

But the reality is never black and white - let's break them up and crumple them up below.

Who kneels first at the big file level?

Let's start with the most realistic threshold: how big a single image can be transferred.

Imagify free version of the direct release of 5MB, basically covering the vast majority of photographers post-tuning the end of the JPEGWP Smush. The free version of WP Smush gets stuck at around 1MB to 2MB in many server configurations (although it officially says it supports 5MB, in reality it is often blocked by the server or PHP settings). If you want to handle large files painlessly, you need to upgrade to Pro.

What's more, some photographers have the habit of dropping their camera images (sometimes 10MB+) directly into the media library for optimization - this is where Imagify's auto-resolution downscaling logic is a bit friendlier, and Smush is prone to the awkward situation where it says, "The file is too big to be processed first! Smush, on the other hand, is prone to the "file is too big, don't process it first" situation.

Who is more balanced, compression or picture quality?

I've run many sets of comparisons myself, and the most intuitive thing I can tell you is this:

  • JPEG Big Picture(Portraits, landscapes, product images) Imagify's Smart mode can usually squeeze out 5%~10% more volume, and the difference is almost invisible to the naked eye. Once I measured a 2.6MB 2072×3980 long image, Imagify pressed it to 838KB, while Smush pressed it and stopped at about 1.1MB, and then prompted me to say "it's good enough" - but in fact, it can be pressed again.

  • PNG Figure(Transparent background, white background product image) WP Smush clearly has the upper hand in this area, especially the Super Smush with Pro on, the compression rate often runs up to 75%~82%, while Imagify usually hangs around between 65%~72%.

In a nutshell: want the smallest size + decent image quality → Imagify Smart mode is the most stable want to squeeze PNG to death → Smush Pro is more ruthless

Photography Station vs E-commerce Station, who is the better choice?

photographer

There are two things I am most afraid of: one is that the client won't pay if the details are muddled, and the other is that the client will just close the page if the website is stuck. That's why I recommend Imagify. Its three compression levels (Normal / Aggressive / Ultra) give you a lot of choices, and it's easy to back up the original images, so if you over-compress them, you can restore them with a single click. Plus the auto-conversion WebP, and it's quite a bit clearer on a cell phone.

I have a friend who does business portraits, the site used to load in 5.8 seconds on average, and after using Imagify full site optimization + lazy loading, it dropped to 2.1 seconds, and the number of inquiries increased dramatically.

e-commerce company that sells goods

There are hundreds of product images, most of which are transparent PNGs, and the pursuit is "clear enough, but it must be fast". This is where the advantages of WP Smush come into play - unlimited free image optimization + PNG compression is particularly powerful. Combined with its slow-loading image scanning function, it can quickly find out which pictures are really dragging.

I've seen a clothing store that opened Smush Pro + CDNThe mobile PageSpeed went from 47 to 69, and the conversion rate went up by 18% - it was worth the money.

A few final words of truth

Neither plugin is actually bad, and the difference is not as exaggerated as advertised. What really pulls the experience apart is often not the plugin itself, but whether you have it or not:

  • Really batch run through the full media library
  • Open WebP Output
  • With lazy loading and CDN
  • Regularly look at PageSpeed and actual visitor behavior data

If you're still on the fence, why don't you install the free version of both, optimize 50 of the largest images on your site, and see who's more satisfying in terms of size, image quality, and loading time - data is always more persuasive than words.
